Quick Takeaway
For a quick answer, check the main steps below. Always ensure proper sanitation and optimal temperatures for the best yield.
The Two Phases of Growth
Mushroom cultivation has two distinct environmental phases: Incubation (mycelium growth) and Fruiting (mushroom growth).
Incubation Parameters
- Temperature: 70°F - 75°F (21°C - 24°C)
- Humidity: Not critical (the bag retains internal moisture)
- Light: Total darkness is preferred but not strictly necessary
- CO2: High (mycelium tolerates and generates high CO2 while colonizing)
Fruiting Parameters
- Temperature: 55°F - 65°F (13°C - 18°C) for Blue/Pearl Oysters. 70°F - 80°F (21°C - 27°C) for Pink/Golden Oysters.
- Humidity: 85% - 90% (Crucial to prevent pins from drying out and aborting).
- Light: Indirect natural light or 6500K LED lights for 12 hours a day.
- CO2: LOW. Oyster mushrooms need massive amounts of Fresh Air Exchange (FAE). If your stems are long and caps are tiny, they need more air.
